Case study - Ethics applied to the workplace

Good, ethical behaviour in terms of research is no different to ordinary good, ethical behaviour. We all have a set of rules we must follow when we study at an institution or work for a company. Sometimes these rules are at odds with the moral ethics involved in being a good human being. But issues such as protecting the young and sick, saving lives, not hurting people, looking after the best interestsof others, being fair - these are all highly desirable human qualities that are not rules as such, more moral codes that people try to live by. The following scenarios illustrate ethical problems in a variety of contexts.

a. Dr Smith teaches a writing course at a community college. One overseas student, Iriat L., struggles with English and usually submits assignments late. Iriat hands in a particular essay that is quite good and ordinarily would receive a Credit, but it has been submitted one day late - the student is penalised one mark and the essay receives a Pass. Iriat ultimately receives a Pass grade for the unit. The following term, another young woman, Sara B., asks to speak with Dr Smith. She tells him that her friend Iriat had borrowed a research paper she had written for another class - ‘to see an example of a real essay in English' - and had then just retyped the paper, changing the wording here and there, and handed it in to Dr Smith as her own. Sara then produces her own paper as proof.

b. Michelle H. is the environmental compliance manager for a small plastics manufacturing company. She is currently faced with the decision of whether or not to spend money on new technology that will reduce the level of a particular chemical in the waste that flows from her factory into a nearby lake. The factory's emission levels are within legal limits. However, if emissions stay at these levels, the fish in the lakes and rivers in the area might soon have to be declared unsafe for human consumption.
