The scenario: You are the leader of a cross functional team and you have managed to build solid relationships with every member. One of your team members, both the youngest andtige newest employee, has asked you for some advice about a non-team related situation. It seems that a customer that he has been worng with wants to give him and his manager (and their spouses) on almost all expenses paid weekend getaway, in appreciation for the excellent work they have just completed for the customer.

Your company's policy is clear about not excepting monetary gifts, but has been fairly lenient about employees accepting merchandise gifts with customer logos. You get the impression that your team member has been hesitant to commit and now his manager is pressuring him to accept; arguing that it is not a monetary gift, that the customer will be insulted if they refuse to accept and it could harm future relations, and that because it is a weekend no one in the organization needs to know what employees do on their own time. Your team member is clearly distressed and is asking you what he should do.

The scenario: YORAtte UK project leader andpyour team Is now 3 months into on important and secretive project, and you have been struggling to get this project team focused on the tasks at hand. It seems like that at every meeting someone voices a complaint and another person takes offense. At the last meeting the minor flare-up turned into a full-blown, finger pointing, name calling, shouting match between Dick and Jane about who was responsible for taking core of Spot (the code word for one phase of this project). Fortunately this occurred right at the end of the meeting and everyone quickly dispersed, but you realize that the issue has not been resolved between these two, and that you need to do something about It.

The student says to you, "I just don't get it. Maslow's motivational theory clearly explains that security is the second most basic motivational force, and I ask you, what provides a sense of security more than a big paycheck? But this Herzberg guy says that wages and pay are de-motivators. How can I ever be expected to be an effective manager if they won't let us use financial incentives like increased wages and bonuses to motivate and retain workers?'
