Discussion: How the hippies influenced the counterculture of the 1960's.
Question : Who were the Hippies and how did they influence the culture of the 1960s?
Hippies were generally young, white Americans in their late teens through mid-twenties who were disenchanted with traditional American culture and values. They tended to demonstrate this disenchantment by embracing a lifestyle and value system that was in stark contrast to the lifestyle and value system of contemporary America. Though there were many counter-cultural groups in other countries, the term "hippies" refers to those from the United States. They had anti-establishment points of view. These included a strong anti-war (Vietnam) sentiment which initially was vocal but as time went on became very pro-active and at times physically violent. They also encouraged and practiced a much more relaxed (some would say irresponsible) sexual lifestyle than conventional American society would have approved of. They favored the new musical styles of rock and roll such as the Beatles, The Doors, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. Another central part of the hippie subculture was drug experimentation primarily with Marijuana and LSD.
