Explain the importance of identifying an overarching

OBJECTIVES

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

Define and give examples of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research.

Give examples of qualitative and quantitative instruments.

Engage in the process and explain the importance of identifying an overarching research question or hypothesis, sub-questions, study goals, and objectives.

Define the terms validity and reliability and describe how they are applied in research

Discussion 1

Identifying Sub-questions, Goals and Objectives

Restate the overarching primary research question you identified in the first discussion in Unit 2. Now, consider what information you will need to answer this question and identify the research sub-questions (no more than 23). Additionally, think about your primary research goal and state it. Finally, identify those objectives that must be achieved in order to accomplish your goal. Combined, these questions and statements form the foundation of your study. You will see as we progress how they help you determine what methods to employ and what instruments and tools you will need.

Discussion 2

Selecting Data Collection Methodology

Based on your readings and your identified research question, what methods will you need to employ for your study? Also, identify your preliminary thoughts regarding your data collection instruments (for example, interviews, survey, et cetera).

Respond to a learner who is conducting a study using different methods than you. For example, if you are proposing to employ a mixed-methods approach, select someone who plans on a qualitative or quantitative study. Evaluate the description of the learner's study and the proposed methods. Support your views with information drawn from the literature.
