Explain potential reach of messages

Mediated communication and social media (like, email, blogs, Facebook, Skype, and Twitter) have played the key role in changing the way which organizations engage in communication with their customers and with employees internally. As I have seen in Military, mediated communication has had its share of friction over years. Some current examples may be extreme; though, it illustrates the magnitude on how mediated communications (Facebook) can quickly tarnish reputation of service which took years to build. Some examples (most recognized photo in the media) was where U.S. Marines urinated on enemy's bodies, and other was the SS (Scout Sniper symbol) next to the American flag in Afghanistan. Both of these photos went viral in minutes after its posting on Facebook. After affects are still being felt today. All too frequently, social media users are lulled into sense of complacency, that fails to acknowledge the fact that one's audience can be significantly larger than previously thought. What can we do to better remind ourselves of potential reach of messages?
