Explain Mixed Numbers with examples?
Everybody loves a bargain, right?
But sometimes these "special deals" aren't what they seem to be.
For example, pretend you were at a music store and saw a sign that said: "Buy 1 tape for $4.20 and get 1 free, or buy 2 tapes for $20.00 and get 7 free."
The trick to finding the better deal is to find out how much 1 tape costs for each deal and compare those prices.
Step 1: Change $4.20 to 420 cents, and change $20.00 to 2,000 cents.
Converting dollars to cents makes the numbers easier to work with. (You will learn more about these kinds of conversions in the next chapter.)
Step 2: Make a fraction for each deal, putting number of tapes in the numerator and the price in the denominator.
2/420 = 1/210 = (2 tapes for 420 cents)
and
9/2000= (9 tapes for 2,000 cents)
1/210 means that 1 tape costs 210 cents;
9/2000 comes out to about 222 cents per tape.
Which is the better deal?
2 tapes for $4.20!
