The medical model of substance abuse disorders focuses on the issue of whether or not the disorder is caused or correlated with genetic traits. The bottom line of this model is that researchers are not able to give a clear answer due to a lack of sufficient research. It does appear at times that substance abuse tendencies could be genetic, but there are usually many other factors involved that contribute to the actual use of the substance abuse. Genetics alone is not a sole cause of substance abuse disorders, although it has been said that even when an adopted child is grown, there have been many instances where that adopted child has more of an addictive nature than the adoptive parents, which proves some genetic connection which cannot be ignored. However, to call the genetic connection a "disease" is controversial.

The psychosocial model of substance abuse disorders focuses on the issue of learned behavior, maladaptive thinking and poor social skills. In a nutshell, when a child is raised with parents who do bad things, the child learns to do those things as well, even substance abuse. Once the child learns the way of substance abuse, the child will develop a physical addiction which results in the disorder. Naturally, when a child's thoughts and relationships with his or her peers is poor, the child will want to escape those feelings which also may lead to substance abuse even if the parents are not practicing abuse.

The spiritual model of substance abuse disorders focuses on selfishness. I want what I want because it is all about me and how I feel. Selfish people want to get high at all costs. They do not think of others and it is all about them. All addiction includes selfishness and all people are selfish to some degree and always will be until we die and go to heaven! The point of the Christian life is to put the flesh away and follow Christ, so we all struggle with this.

When you combine all three models, the combination can be disastrous. The answer is a relationship with Christ. Parents play a huge role as well. Parents should educate their children about addiction issues so they may be avoided.
