Unit 4: Developing Your Management Inquiry Skills: Collecting and Analysing Data

In this unit, you will examine what types of data will best answer your research question. You will determine what methods are available to gather useful and relevant data and which are consistent with your research paradigm and methodology. Finally, you will draft a data collection plan by selecting appropriate research strategies and tools.

Have you ever participated in a customer satisfaction survey? Do you remember what types of questions they asked you? Many companies frequently distribute surveys to their customers to help improve their product or experience. Surveys may ask closed-ended questions, such as ‘How likely are you to return to this place of business?' or ‘How satisfied are you with your experience?' which can yield a numerical answer (e.g. 1 = Very Dissatisfied, 2 = Dissatisfied, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Satisfied, 5 = Very Satisfied). This we call Likert scale answer categories. Surveys may also ask you to answer an open-ended question such as, ‘Describe your experience', to which you would write a longer response. The researchers who develop and administer such surveys carefully consider how they will utilise the numerical, audio and textual responses to answer their research question before distributing the surveys.

Discuss
It is now your turn to determine your plan for collecting and analysing the data for your Research Proposal.
Shared Activity: Evaluating and Choosing Data Analysis Techniques
This fourth unit offers one assessment - an online discussion or ‘Shared Activity', taking place on the Discussion Forum. This is worth 10% of the overall module grade. Your initial post should be completed by Day 7 of this unit.
For this Shared Activity, you will choose data analysis techniques and formulate a data collection and analysis plan.
To prepare for this Shared Activity:
You are required to make an initial post to the Shared Activity by Day 7.
- Review Units 1 and 2 Shared Activities and your Unit 3 Project, in this module, to ensure that your plan aligns to all components of your Research Proposal and will enable you to answer your research question.
- Identify two examples of a management research article, such as ones from your Critical Literature Review, and evaluate and critically compare the data collection methods used.
To complete this Shared Activity:
By Day 7:

Write a 500-word post:

- Define your data collection and analysis plan.

- Provide a rationale that explains how your plan supports your research question and purpose and how it fits with your methodology and methods. Are there alternative analysis tools or strategies that you considered? If so, explain why you did not include them in your plan.

- Describe your chosen approach to data analysis for your research question, including the following:

o Explain how this data analysis approach will help answer your research question.

o Discuss how this data analysis approach is appropriate for the type of data you will be collecting and how it will ensure the validity and reliability (if appropriate) of your results.

o Identify strategies you might use to present the results of this type of data analysis.

o Identify the challenges you foresee in interpreting and making inferences with this approach to data analysis.
- Be sure to include references to all sources in Harvard Referencing Style
