Evaluate the relative merits of each system in terms of

Automated part processing

Part 1: Background research

For this assignment you need to research different methods of part detection for robotic part handling or conveyor belt operations. Available systems include, but are not limited to:

• Photosensitive detectors
• Laser light curtains
• Vision systems
• Thermography

Evaluate the relative merits of each system in terms of cost, ease-of-use, flexibility, range, field of view, etc. In each case, provide an example application where the method has/can be used in either automated, or manual manufacturing.

Part 2: Automation case study

Consider automating a non-trivial everyday process, such as making a cup of tea or automatically turning on the windscreen wipers in a car when it rains.

• List (and briefly describe) all the inputs that the human operator might wish to include and

• all the feedback signals required to complete the process efficiently and safely.

• Write down all the steps required to accomplish the process.

Thereby, produce a logic flow chart for your chosen process.

Would any automatic detection device discussed in Part 1 be suitable to assist with this automation? Give reasons for your answer, giving consideration to minimise the amount of human interaction required.
