Evaluate the effective data management

Assignment Title: Portfolio

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify and critically evaluate the key requirements for effective data management, analysis and presentation to meet users' needs.

2. Develop a small management information reporting system that meets the users' needs using a prototyping / Agile approach in the SAS programming environment.

Assignment Tasks: This module encompasses three assessment tasks as follows.

Research Presentation - You are required to work in pairs to research a SAS Proc procedure and should make a presentation in class.

Story Telling Report - You will be provided with a raw dataset. Using the tools of your choice, you are required to analyze the data and present a short descriptive report about the dataset.

SAS based MIS - individually, you will design, construct and demonstrate a small SAS-based Management Information System (MIS) along with a written report.

Task 1: Research Presentation

You will work in pairs for this research task. You are required to choose and research a SAS Proc procedure which can be used for data analytics. The procedure you choose CANNOT be a simple Proc step (such as Proc MEANS), this should include complex analytics techniques such as prediction modelling, descriptive modelling etc. You must confirm your chosen procedure with your tutor before starting your research. Student pairs cannot work on the same topics, so the topics will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. The topics for Task 1 can include but not limited to the following.

Proc ARIMA

Proc AUTOREG

Proc ROBUSTREG

Proc CLUSTER

Proc FASTCLUS

Proc ANOVA

Proc CANCORR

This task has a primary objective of sharing knowledge among the peers. The knowledge you acquire from this task would be useful when developing your MIS system for Task 3.

Task 2: Story Telling Report

This section is strictly individual. You will be provided with a raw dataset. You are required to understand the dataset and present useful statistical inferences about the raw data. The dataset will be introduced during the lecture in due course. You can choose any analytics environment for this task. You are required to write a short report of around 1000 words, for telling a story about the data. The purpose of 'telling a story' here implies you to explain the nature of the data, what inferences you are looking for and the insights extracted, and how they can be useful. You must include screenshots of your analysis from the chosen environment, and should provide your insights and inferences of your analysis in your report. The assessment will be based on the following - Introducing the dataset, Analysis and explanation and Presentation.

Task 3: SAS based MIS

This section is strictly individual. You are required to demonstrate how you can apply what you are learning, by constructing a small data analysis system. Search for and download a dataset that is of interest to you. Please feel free to discuss it with your tutor before you use it. The dataset needs to be sizeable both in terms of the number of records (depth - a few thousand records) and the number of dimensions (variables - width). You CANNOT use the dataset of Task 2. You are required to design an analysis system and conduct your analysis using SAS.

Your objectives are set in two components: A written report - telling a story and Demonstration of your SAS based MIS in class.

Extract all the knowledge within the dataset for the purpose of "telling a story" about the data. This should include demonstration of your developed analysis design, which should reflect on your competence in SAS by exhibiting your skills of importing data into SAS, data cleansing, complex and critical analytics using various Proc procedures, ODS systems, graphics, and creating reports etc. The purpose of 'telling a story' here implies you to explain the nature of the data, what inferences you are looking for, and how they are achieved using SAS with proper evidence of using SAS. You should write a report of around 2000 words for telling a story. The report will be assessed based on the following. (Note: you must include your SAS codes in the report).

Introducing the dataset

Usage of SAS procedures

Interpretation of results

Report Presentation

Whilst introducing the dataset, you should explain the nature, and analytics complexities of the datasets in terms of the big data problems within the dataset, and should identify key stakeholders for the datasets and should justify how your analysis would be useful for the identified stakeholders.
