Encourage and develop a shared purpose in work goals

Case Study: Leading and Facilitating the Work Team

Kate, Bob and Tim work in your team. Each has a separate work role but must liaise with each other to coordinate the workflow and to complete overall team tasks.

There is a problem between Kate and Bob; they have different opinions on how to conduct work. Kate has a very structured approach to work tasks, while Bob takes on tasks more intuitively. Both complete their tasks to organisational requirements but have a different approach and cannot agree on work decisions without entering into disagreements. Team working is actively encouraged, so they must find a way to get along and work together.

Tim works with both Kate and Bob and finds the work atmosphere unpleasant at times and finds it hard to ignore the workplace tensions. He must work with them separately and together and is often caught in the middle of personal disagreements. Tim's work is beginning to suffer as a consequence, which is adding to his frustrations.

1. Explain how you would conduct the following with Kate, Bob and Tim:

  • Encourage and develop a shared purpose in work goals
  • Encourage and foster team understanding of work roles and responsibilities
  • Identify and resolve the work problem
  • Give feedback and discuss the work issue to encourage their participation and to show value in their individual and team efforts and reward performance.
  • Model good behaviour and practice.
  • Maintain open communication in the team

2. With reference to Kate's, Bob's and Tim's work issues, how could you develop policies and procedures to allow the team to take responsibility in order to perform their work roles?
