The Coriolis Effect and Ocean Surface Currents

Because the Earth rotates, the Coriolis effect causes deflection of water and air currents in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Below is a diagram showing some of the resulting deflection caused by the Earth's rotation and the Coriolis effect. Solid arrows show the initial direction of motion of the material (water, air), and dashed arrows show the resultant direction of motion due to deflection caused by the Coriolis effect.

1) Motion of water and air currents in the northern hemisphere are always deflected to the right from the perspective of initial motion. This creates circular patterns that move CLOCKWISE COUNTERCLOCKWISE.

2) Motion of water and air currents in the southern hemisphere are always deflected to the left from the perspective of initial motion. This creates circular patterns that move CLOCKWISE COUNTERCLOCKWISE.

7) Now choose a point somewhere on the planet that is NOT on the equator. Draw a star to indicate your starting point. Decide with direction you will travel. Draw your path taking into account the Coriolis effect.

11) Japan is on the western side of the Pacific ocean. Would you expect the water temperatures off the coast of Japan to be more similar to Southern California or South Carolina (refer to the map above). Explain.

12) A shipment of rubber duckies falls off a cargo ship at location A in the map below. Explain the path the rubber duckies will follow using the letters shown, and where they may end up?

13) Could the rubber duckies end up at location B.
