Does the fact sheet reflect knowledge gained from the class

Question: Fact Sheet on a Contemporary Gender Issue

The purpose of this assignment is to produce a summary of key facts relevant to a current gender issue. Fact sheets are intended to be useful sources of information for teaching, social action, and other occasions where succinct, accessible information is needed. To that end, it is important that facts sheets not only be informative, but also concise (two pages), clearly written, well organized, and visually appealing. Your fact sheet will include the following information: statement of problem, definition and application of relevant sociological concepts, at least one intersectional analysis, current data from credible sources (tables and graphs are helpful), important activist and/or community organizations (websites, etc.), sources for further information, and a brief bibliography of sources used in the report.

To find a topic, think about course readings, class discussions, and activities and ask, "What would I like to know more about?" or "What do I think is more important for others to learn about?" Your topic should be something we have not explored in detail.

Possible topics include:

? Pay gap

? Sexual assault on college campuses

? Sexual harassment in the workplace

? Women in STEM

? Men and suicide

? Men and substance abuse

Below are links to examples of fact sheets. They do not follow the specific guidelines of this assignment, but they give a sense of what fact sheets are, how they are used, and what they should include. These examples are intended to be informational only. You are NOT expected to follow them as models.

Your fact sheet should contain the following sections:

Part 1-Clearly STATE THE ISSUE you are addressing. Why is this topic important? Who is affected? Why should we care?

Part 2-What CONCEPTS are you using to frame your problem? Use what you've learned in class to frame the problem. Make sure to include at least one intersectional analysis.

Part 3-List at least 10 IMPORTANT STATISTICS or FACTS about your topic EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW. These should also include an intersectional analysis. For this step, you will need to find secondary data using existing sources. Government websites and research centers often provide good data.

Part 4-Include VISUALS, tables, charts, etc.

Part 5-List at least 5 THINGS that can be done to IMPROVE THE PROBLEM (e.g., solutions/action steps): Solutions/action steps can be individual, community or government- based.

Part 6-List 5 ways readers CAN LEARN MORE or GET INVOLVED: Community resources, academic resources, key activist resources, websites, etc.

Part 7-List of SOURCES used in the fact sheet in APA style. In-text citations should be used throughout the fact sheet. You should include at least 10 sources, 1 of which should be your course textbook.

Remember that your goal is to be concise, readable, and attention grabbing. Carefully consider your font, spacing, and use of visuals. Your final product should be two pages.

Fact Sheets will be distributed to the campus community as part of a tabling event on gender equity during assessment week.

In terms of evaluating fact sheets, here are some things I will look for:

1. Does the fact sheet reflect knowledge gained from the class? Is the topic relevant? Is the frame sociological?

2. Has the author identified her/his key concepts? Have the concepts been appropriately applied to the fact sheet topic?

3. Are valid facts obtained from reliable sources? Has the author provided complete citations for the facts?

4. Does the fact sheet represent effort? Does it lack typos, errors, etc.? Is it concise, easily readable and attention getting?
