Some scholars have suggested that all aspects of Roman life and culture reflect, to some extent, the spirit of Roman imperialism. Define imperialism or empire in your own words; then explain to what extent you see Roman imperialism reflected in the art and architecture (including engineering) of ancient Rome, providing examples. When Washington, D.C. was built, a conscious decision was made to build many government buildings and monuments in a neoclassical style. Look at the images of an aerial view of Washington D.C., the U.S. Capitol, the White House, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. Compare these to Greek and Roman buildings that you studied, Do you think that the architecture of Washington D.C. reflects some values, ideals, or ambitions similar to those found in Roman imperialism? If so, which, and to what extent? If not, why not? Provide support for your points from the reading and with specific examples.
