Part A: Over the course of the past year, a retail store owner has observed that the customer traffic coming through the store is predictable, if not constant and consistent.  She has noted that customer traffic is higher or lower during certain days of the week, times of the day, or months of the year.  While certain events that impact this variability are beyond her control (i.e. seasonality, customer shopping availability, etc.), in what ways can she influence the arrival patterns of her customers to encourage a more constant arrival?

Part B: The local coffee shop is open 8 hours per day.  On an average day, the coffee shop serves 160 customers.  It takes about 4 minutes to serve a customer.  What is the average hourly arrival rate of the customers? What is the inter-arrival time (in minutes) of the customers? Will the queue at the coffee shop grow?

Part C: What is the difference between the concepts of design quality and conformance quality?

Part D: In manufacturing processes, what is the ideal lot size?  Why? (must properly explain why)
