Numerous studies evaluating the achievement gap, successful strategies for working with students of color, and even successful teachers of color are presently available in educational literature. Thus, little empirical research specifically examines how White teachers, who make up 90 % of public school teachers in the United States, are able to profitably educate students of color in rural White schools and how their racial consciousness affect their teaching of students of color. To address this gap in the literature, I will evaluate the following four questions: In high achieving rural elementary schools with a predominantly White student population and staff:

(a) What strategies are White educators using to increase achievement for students of color,

(b) What strategies do the school leaders take to facilitate high achievement for students of color in these schools,

(c) How do White educators experience Whiteness, and

(d) How does the teachers' and administrators' experiences of White consciousness impact the strategies for teaching students of color?

 I will use Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) as a conceptual framework to guide this multi-case qualitative study. I will use interviews, observations, and document reviews to study three rural elementary schools with predominantly White staff and strong records of high achievement for students of color.
