The purpose of my research is to analyze the motivational effects of teachers to a performance-based bonus pay program in Korea that has been adopted since 2001. As its title implies, it was designed to help teachers become more motivated to faithfully serve the student. Therefore, there is good reason to learn more about how and to what extent the program has motivated employees in schools to change their behaviors in the manner expected and to identify any other positive or negative effects of the program across as well as within the Korean elementary schools. The present time of educational reform and budgetary stringency requires analyzing the bonus pay to develop and rebuild the desirable pay system.
This research combines both qualitative (on-site interviews) and quantitative (survey) data. The first is the development of a core data base made up of extensive data for school sites by qualitative and quantitative data for teachers, principals or assistant principals serving as an evaluator in each school to better understand program context, design and implementation issues. These schools will be drawn from 30 randomly selected localities around Seoul, Korea to reflect various sizes, student populations, and geographical classifications.
