Discussion about the nature versus nurture

Assignment Instructions:

Nature versus Nurture

In our readings, we learn more about the nature versus nurture argument.  For this discussion, I want you to go in depth a bit more and debate the importance of one over the other (or both if you think this to be true), using research to make your argument.

Important Debate Rules:

Debating and arguing a point have rules.  Debating is a process done using knowledge and clear examples provided by research and theory.  Arguing is emotional and sometimes our feelings or experiences can provide insight, but they can also get in the way of providing a clarity about a topic.  For this discussion forum, when someone posts their opposing arguments, you cannot ignore them and just argue a different point.  You must counter what they are proposing with research that shows a different result.

This point reminds me of an argument I had once with my brother.  During our twenties, my brother became heavily involved with a bad group of individuals and started using heavy drugs.  I clearly laid out his behaviors and provided clear examples of trouble he had gotten into with these individuals and provided research about how these drugs could cause brain issues and lung damage.   He countered by not defending my points or discussing his behavior, but instead, said, "well your fat and ugly."  His hurtful comments had nothing to do with my argument and were an emotional response rather than a response that provides a clear counter argument that would defend his use of drugs.

Now... this isn't the perfect example.  LOL  But, my point is this: If someone argues something, go find the research or theory that provides rationale for that counters their argument.  Do not just find a different point and toss it out there... your response to others' posts must be kind, rational, and provide a reference to research or theory.

Step 1  - Read more about nature and nurture by doing some research.  Look up keywords like child development, nature versus nurture, differences between nature and nurture, genes versus environment, etc...  Be sure to write down your references so that you can provide citations in your argument.

Step 2 - Decide what you want to argue - Which is more important to the development of a child - nature or nurture?

Step 3 - Build up your argument in one paragraph providing citations to your findings and a reference at the end of your paragraphs.  Be sure to write your debate points in your own words.  Do not copy something from the web.  Do not use ChaptGPT or any other AI generator--do the work yourself--Cite your info and argument by describing what you read in your own words.

Note:  Citations look like this (Rymond, 2020), and APA references go at the end of a paper.  Here is a page that will help you write your APA reference for a website (i.e., electronic resource):  APA Reference GuideLinks to an external site.

Step 4 - Respond to three of your peers.  When you respond, if you agree with them, provide additional information that solidifies their points.  Use citations.  If you argue their point, do the same - provide information that counters their points and use citations.
