Skin cancer happens when skin cells grow abnormally, usually due to too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure (Kanitakis, 2021). Early detection and proper treatment rely on learning about skin lesions and various types of cancer. Types of Skin Cancer The most typical skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, yet it does not spread as much as melanoma, which can become fatal because it can spread (American Cancer Society, 2023). Risk Factors Key risk factors for skin cancer include prolonged UV exposure, use of tanning beds, fair skin, family history, and immunosuppression. UV radiation causes DNA damage in epidermal cells, promoting mutations (Armstrong & Kricker, 2020). Clinical Presentation Skin lesions are not the same for every type of cancer. BCC usually forms pearly or waxy lumps, whereas SCC becomes red, scaly or ulcerated patches. Melanoma often appears as a pigmented mole that is not round, has an irregular border, is more than one colour, is larger than 6 mm and changes over time (Rigel & Carucci, 2000). Diagnostic Tools Doctors diagnose using methods such as a clinical exam and a biopsy. Dermoscopy helps doctors see the structure of lesions and determine whether they are benign or malignant (Kittler et al., 2002).
