Problem:
The purpose of this phenomenological study, guided by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), is to explore how Jamaican left-behind spouses understand and make meaning of prolonged employment-related marital separation. The study gives particular attention to perceived choice versus perceived constraint and to how these perceptions are reflected in emotional strain, coping, resilience, and marital functioning. The study will include a purposive sample of approximately 10-15 participants, consistent with IPA's idiographic emphasis on depth (Smith et al., 2009). This study focuses on legally married left-behind spouses within the Jamaican context, recognizing that experiences of separation may vary across relationship forms, but centers on marriage due to its cultural, legal, and institutional significance in migration-related family arrangements. Participants will be Jamaican left-behind spouses residing in Jamaica whose partners are employed overseas and who have experienced at least 12 consecutive months of employment-related marital separation. Participants will be recruited through community-based and institutional sources within rural and urban Jamaica, including faith-based organizations such as the Jamaica Council of Churches, social service and family-support agencies such as the Jamaica Social Investment Fund, and moderated online groups serving Jamaican migrant families, for example, Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
