Discussion about indigenous governance and justice

Assignment task: In this assignment, students will describe what we have learned about Indigenous governance and justice throughout the first section of this course. You must compare these learning's with your pre-existing understanding of the Canadian governance and justice systems.

Though this is a comparative paper, the goal is not to simply create a list of differences or similarities. To be more specific, your paper should take the following form:

1. Describe 1-2 things you've learned about Indigenous philosophies and systems of justice/governance using references from the course materials.

  • le. Anishinaabe governance values consensus-based decision-making.

2. Compare these 1-2 points with the Canadian systems.

  • The Canadian government makes decisions based on majority rules.

3. Reflect on why you personally find these differences or similarities meaningful or significant.

  • You argue that you value efficiency, so the Canadian system is preferable,
  • OR perhaps you value broader participation in decision-making, making the Anishinaabe system more meaningful. Explain your view in either case.

These 1000-1300 (3-4 pages excluding bibliography) word assignments should be in APA format and are intended to help students develop critical reflection and comparison skills. No additional research beyond the course readings is required.
