Problem: You already know that you don't communicate the same way with everyone. In your family, you might use certain shortcuts or have family jokes; these would be hard for someone outside your family to understand. When you're communicating with people who share an interest with you, such as skydiving or reading Spanish literature or a playing a particular video game, you may use terminology that is understandable only to someone else with the same interest. So it should come as no surprise that you will communicate differently with your academic peers and your professional colleagues than you do in your personal life.
