How do you plan to integrate this information into your teaching practice to support children? Discuss the types of strategies you would use when interacting with children.
The first point I found interesting was on slide 13 of the Feelings and friends- Emotional and Social Competence slideshow. It says "Anxiety and anger cause great problems for children, making it important for teachers to provide learning opportunities about how to deal with anxiety and anger" (M. Marian Guidance of young children). As a future early childhood educator, I found this quite interesting because knowing that anxiety and anger cause big problems for children in my care, I will make sure to take note of that and help children be calm and cool and not stress by planning activities that suit their needs and that they will enjoy. Also anger management, if I teach children how to deal with their anger then it will be beneficial to them so they know how to express it and also impacts their emotional intelligence.
The second point I found interesting is from the article "Helping young children control anger and handle disappointment" (Gail E.Joseph & Phillip S. Strain). I found out that children that have conduct problems and poor impulse control are more likely to be peer rejected because they can't really regulate and control their feelings leading to other students getting hurt and not wanting to play with the child, whereas those who can control it have the oppisode more peers who accept them. Children must be able to understand and control their own emotional reactions and stress levels before they can manage interpersonal conflict in a productive way because if they know how to handle themselves they will know how to cope in better ways.By identifying and intervening with kids who need extra help developing these skills, educators can play a big role in helping kids learn to regulate their anger and impulsive behavior as well as handle frustration in acceptable ways. By knowing this it will help me as an educator to help children remain calm and give them tips and show them how to manage their anger wisely and ways to handle their disappointment.
