Discuss the purposes of human communication

Assignment task: Speech Communications

Problem 1: Five purposes of human communication are detailed (to help, to discover, to relate, to persuade, to play).  Select one and describe how developing this purpose would benefit you at your current or future job:

Problem 2: While the culture we grew up with (family, religion, region, etc) help shape our identities - it does not always define us. Chapter two discusses a true cultural perspective: describe both an element of your enculturation that you still accept and one that you have left behind.  Why did you make this choice?

Problem 3: Chapter three briefly discusses noxious and nourishing people.  Oddly, both can serve as a benefit to us.  Which one of these describes your current self and personality?  Are you sure?  As you look back upon your cultural background (Chapter 2), were you surrounded with more noxious or nourishment?  Can you see the effect that style has today?

Problem 4: Nonjudgmental/critical/surface/depth/polite/impolite/active/inactive listening: through all these terms, your book is basically giving you a step-by-step manual of how to potentially live happily ever after with others or to be a slave to drama and misery. Your tasks for question six is to 1) create the "ideal" listening partner using the examples from the text and, 2) create a Frankenstein-like monster of the non-ideal listening partner. Can you see some of these non-ideal behaviors in your own life?
