Discuss the composers use of consonance and dissonance

Concert Report

Concert Reports: All concert reports must be accompanied by proof of attendance to be accepted for credit. Proof includes but is not limited to ticket stubs, concert programs, digital photos including yourself in the photograph, drink receipts, etc.

The first assignment for this course is the attendance of a concert of your choice. It can be any genre of music you are interested in (Rock, R&B, Jazz, Punk), as long as it is live (no D.J.'s). ONE movement or small work will be discussed in your paper (please do not attempt to analyze the entire concert).

The second assignment for this course is the attendance of a CLASSICAL concert. The concert itself can be any of your choice in the classical medium, including solo performances, opera, symphony orchestras, or chamber music. If you are having trouble finding a concert please see me as soon as possible.

ONE movement, or small work will be discussed in your paper (please do not attempt to analyze the entire concert). All work must be typewritten. Grammar and clear presentation will be graded as well as content.

There will be ONE opportunity for extra credit for the course, the attendance of an additional concert of your choice with accompanying concert report. It will be in the same format as the first concert attended, and will have the same point value.

Guidelines to concert report structure:

The concert reports will be two to three pages in length consisting of two sections. The first section will be devoted to the identification of the elements of music discussed in chapter 2. Sound Harmony Melody Rhythm Growth must all be addressed in the first section of your paper.

Please elaborate in paragraph form on each element of music, explaining how and why you came to your conclusions. This section
should be approximately 1.5 pages.

Sound: Discuss Timbre and Texture of the composition, and how you reached the conclusions.

Harmony: Discuss the composers use of consonance and dissonance throughout the piece, and what impact it has on the composition.

Melody: Discuss the use of range, shape and movement in the melody and how it affects the composition.

Rhythm: Discuss the elements of tempo and whether the rhythm is simple and strait forward or contains elements of syncopation, if meter is compound or simple, and if it has a duple, triple or quadruple emphasis. Please elaborate how you arrived at your conclusions.

Growth: Discuss (to the best of your abilities) the structure of the piece. Use letters to denote major sections as outlined in the text. Most music will fit the traditional structures outlined in the text, with some exceptions.

The second section of the paper will address your own personal impressions of the concert. Address the level of preparation of performers, overall atmosphere, concert venue, and your own critique of the overall experience. This section should be approximately 1 page.
