Problem:
One barrier that may be holding nursing practice from achieving the goal of implementing Evidence-based practice is that nurses may not realize they already have the knowledge to do so. The article, " Problem Identification: The First Step in Evidence-Based Practice" highlighted that the five steps to evidence based practice and the nursing process align. The five steps of Evidence based practice are; identifying the problem, accessing the best evidence, critically appraising the evidence, applying the change to practice, and evaluating the change in practice. The Nursing process steps are; assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate. When read side by side the steps of evidence based practice and the nursing process seem the same. Another barrier as identified in the article, "Evidence-based practice: Knowledge, attitudes, implementation, facilitators, and barriers among community nurses-systematic review" is insufficient time. A nurse working a shift rarely has down time to attempt resolving a work flow issue. I feel both issues can be boiled down to a lack of leadership support. The support of the leadership to give time and empower the nursing staff to implement Evidence based practice would make a difference. The formation of committees aimed at specific targets in order to use evidence based practice would be one way leadership could show support, give time, and help nurses identify their ability to make change.
