Discuss different brands of sodas will not spew same amount

Problem

If you shake up different kinds or brands of soft drinks (e.g., carbonated), will they all spew the same amount?

1. Observation: Most of the time when soft drinks are shaken they tend to always spew, but I have never really considered the different amounts that they can spew. For my experiment, I will use three different brands of soda: Coca-cola, Fresca, and Faygo, and all sodas are in cans of 12oz each. For this observation, I will rely on my sight sense to determine the outcome.

2. Hypothesis: I believe that since the sodas contain different amounts of ingredients it could affect the amount that will spew after being shaken.

3. Prediction: Shaking up the different kinds of soft drinks will lead to different amounts of spew.

4. Experiment: I will shake each soda can mildly for one minute, using my right hand, and then open the can immediately after. Between each experiment, I will take a 3-minute break.

5. Controls: All soft drink cans are at room temperature and have not been exposed to sunlight.

6. Results: The Coca-cola drink spewed the most of the three, about an inch high, and spew for about 35 seconds. In second place was the Faygo drink, and it spewed at about half an inch for 25 seconds. The one that spewed the least was Fresca, and it did not spew in height and lasted for about 15 seconds.

7. Conclusions: Based on my results, different brands of sodas will not all spew the same amount. The results may be due to the different amounts of ingredients they each contain.
