Discuss characteristics of criminal justice agencies

Assignment task: What is a good response to this post?

The three unique characteristics of criminal justice agencies that align with the bureaucratic management style that I chose were specialization of tasks, qualifications and training, and the hierarchy of authority. Based on my experience there are many similarities to the military's bureaucratic management system and that of the criminal justice system.

Law Enforcement, Corrections and Courts need to have a framework or an identity developed in order to assign qualifications and training. Identifying what each segment of the criminal justice system does will better determine their scope of qualifications and training that need to be assigned to them. For instance, if a law enforcement officer is assigned a framework to maintain public safety and order, they need to be trained and have qualifications met and maintained. Because an identity or specialization of tasks have been identified, the law enforcement officer's duties and responsibilities can be approved by the organization. Once the law enforcement officer's scope of responsibility has been approved, qualifications and training can be assigned. Much like the specialization of task policies needing approval by bureaucracy management style organizations, policies for qualifications and training need to be authorized.

In order for law enforcement officers to investigate crimes and arrest suspects or corrections officers to enforce punishments for crimes, there are certain attributes that need to be addressed with training and qualification in order for these two segments of the criminal justice system to do their jobs. An example that comes to mind is The Arming Use of Force Model. This model is something officers of the law will use to depict how and when to use a prescribed amount of force. There are lethal and nonlethal means of defending against or approaching a suspect. The Arming Use of Force Model is one of many teaching aids that would have to be approved through a bureaucracy management style of organization that make the policies for qualifications and training. There is a style of communication within a bureaucracy management style of an organization that I'm very familiar with - "the Chain of Command". This style of communication is what brings all the pieces together.

The hierarchy of authority is the last stop for the two characteristics of criminal justice I've mentioned above in this post. Because of the alignment of a bureaucracy management style and the qualifications and specialization of tasks within the organization, the top hierarchy of authority can grant approval. The lower offices can then circulate the approved training and/or the assignment of duties and responsibilities throughout the organization. Every level of offices within the organization has a superior officer in command. When requests like training or assignment of tasks are sent to the hierarchy of authority for approval, can prevent any duplicated training or assignment of tasks by overwriting or eliminating the duplication.

The three characteristics I've identified closely mirror training, job descriptions, and the chain of command I've experienced as a member of the military. It was a challenge translating these characteristics to align with the bureaucratic management style and how they are unique to the criminal justice system.
