What was the 20th century paradox of progressivism?
The Progressives were firm believers that progress in the areas of science and technology would usher in a Golden Age in America and eventually the whole world. They campaigned for worker's rights, women's rights, child labor laws, laws against alcohol, unfair monopolies in business and civil rights as well. They pushed for more investment in science in order to combat childhood diseases and poor health. They enjoyed a significant amount of progress during the early years of the 20th century. Under President Roosevelt they witnessed the passage of labor laws that empowered the worker and reigned in the previously uncontrollable greed of big business. There were improvements in the quality of meat and produce, safety improvements in mining and other industries and improvements in the quality of life for women.
