"Managing the money raised for student activities can be one of the biggest headaches facing a school administrator. It can also be the ruination of a promising career."

I can imagine that this raised a lot of discussion. Anyone who has been teaching for over a year is well aware that a free public school education does not exist. There are science fees, art fees, insurance, gym class fees, locker fees and the list goes on. On top of this, in an effort to hang on to extra-curricular or elective classes like the sports programs, drama club, band, music, travel opportunities and field trips, schools are frequently involved in a half-dozen fund raising efforts at the same time.
Just the fundraising itself can be a headache. Typically, the same target audience is hit up for donations or asked to purchase over-priced items of inferior quality for "the good of the students." Parents become irate because they feel pressured to help their child meet certain fund raising goals. Grandparents get upset because their grandkid wants them to buy magazines, candy or candles that cost two or three times as much as Wal-Mart charges.
Teachers are irritated because their students ask them to pay so many cents per page that they read for a fund raiser. The teacher has been trying to get them to read for years without much result but now the student is enthusiastic about earning money for reading and expects the teacher to fund his/her endeavor.
