Assignment:
A formative assessment is given in the course of teaching a particular lesson and is designed to provide feedback to the teacher regarding student retention and understanding of concepts and ideas. A teacher should use formative assessments in order to know what information, concepts and ideas need to be re-taught or more clearly explained. One way to think about formative assessment is "practice" rather than "test." Here is an example of formative assessment. I am currently teaching Spanish I.
I have been teaching a lesson on clothing and the weather. We have learned some vocabulary both for clothing and types of weather. I ask students to write down five sentences that follow this format. "When it is (type of weather inserted here) I wear a (type of clothing here.)"
For example
When it is hot I wear a hat. (Cuando hace calor llevo un gorro.)
Students turn in their sentences and I look them over making sure the students have understood how to use these vocabulary words properly in a sentence.
