Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduates understand the discipline of nursing through the application of knowledge, incorporating theories from various areas of study, including the basic sciences. The science behind nursing is complex. Biology, anatomy, psychology, and humanities are the foundations that influence the profession of nursing. Gaining knowledge from prerequisite courses, such as anatomy, ensures that nurses understand the systems and functions of the body, providing a foundation for learning about disease processes. Incorporating these sciences and philosophies enables nurses to gain a comprehensive understanding of the "whole" patient (Schadewald, 2025, p. 6). DNP graduates bridge theory and practice. They possess a deep understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of disease processes and pharmacological knowledge, which allows them to personalize individual treatment plans for clients. In addition to assessment information, DNP graduates integrate other critical aspects into the plan of care, such as mental health, cultural and spiritual preferences, and socioeconomic barriers (Butts & Rich, 2021, p.17). For example, a client experiencing somatic distress and fatigue following the death of a parent is diagnosed with depression. While the DNP may have prescriptive authority, depending on state regulations, the client prefers a more holistic approach due to their cultural background. As a result, the DNP refers the client to therapy and counseling. Medically, the DNP concentrates on diagnosing, treating, and managing disease processes. The holistic nursing philosophy focuses on the psychological, mental, and emotional aspects of care. I believe DNPs can function effectively in the advanced practice role, utilizing both the medical model and nursing philosophies. The DNP role allows advanced practice nurses to become influential individuals in the community and profession, with a focus on improving the quality of care through preparation, education, and advocacy (Moran et al., 2023).
