Homework 2
What are the similarities and difference between academic writing (scholarly or traditional writing) and "business" writing (or writing at work)? Discuss some aspects that each venue shares, and also how they differ. From your readings this week, think about how you use tone, vocabulary, voice, and even identify purpose in your writing at work and academic writing. Think about the perspective you use in each and how they are similar and how they are different.

Instructions: Your initial post should be at least 200 words.

This is how the homework suppose to be like from a student in my class please don't rewrite it.

Business writing and academic writing are different sometimes you may not even notice the difference because of the many similarities. Writing in a business style I'm gone argue with this quote, "Academic writing and business writing are two very different writing styles that people use whenever applicable" (Julita, 2011). The similarities are greater, it's all about what message are you wanting the audience to receive. Anytime you write you have to think about who will be reading or listening, business doesn't need extensive details and quotes it needs structure, factual information, formation and small research it has to be more of what was your experience.

"Your purpose in any communication is, first, to be understood. Depending on your audience and the occasion, you should also try, for example, to assume, to convince, to inform, to persuade, or to sympathise, that is to say, your intention should always be both, to be understood and to affect other people in a chosen way" (Barrass, 2003). If I had to write in business the reader doesn't won't to know why the chicken crossed the street instead what did the chicken accomplish after it crossed. Writing academically needs the same beware of reader, structure, fonts, styles, and the big difference is the research. Academic writing wants to know why the chicken crossed, when, what street, time, and so on, then the accomplishments followed with some quotations to back yourself up.  "Like business writing, academic writing may use different styles for different purposes" (Julita, 2011).

You can draw a picture to tell a story that's a style that has purpose, only thing that the writer is doing making certain the reader or listeners understand and you are believable. Tone is still a part of who is listening professionally you need to be serious and down to earth, academically your voice comes from what is being written, telling a funny story is usually a voice that makes you think of the story with you involved in it. Vocabulary is to be at its best during all writing styles, most important to spell correctly.

PREPARATION OUTLINE Example

Purpose Statement:  With this speech, I plan to inform my audience as to why I chose to be an Accountant.

Thesis Statement: Being an accountant offers very diverse work opportunities through the types of businesses requiring accountants, as well as the types of positions accountants fill.

Introduction

Attention Getter: What do you want to be when you grow up? This is probably a question everyone has been asked during childhood, and can be very difficult to answer. My answer to this question was "an accountant."

Overview of Main Points:  Many people may think careers involved with accounting could be rather dull or boring, but there is more to accounting than just keeping track of numbers and the financial health of a company. Over the next few minutes, I will inform everyone on the type of businesses which need accountants, the types of career paths for accountants, and the earnings potential for accountants.

Transition:(I will first discuss where an accountant could find a job.)

Main Point I. Accountants are needed by both public and private sector businesses and government agencies at all levels.

 A. Each business in every state needs accountants to keep track of their finances for reporting requirements to the IRS.

1.      According to the IRS website, IRS.GOV, small businesses are required to file an information return when any reportable transactions were made during the calendar year.

2.      Large businesses, such as corporations, must also file tax returns with the IRS.

3.      Accountants compile data throughout the year into financial reports which are used to file taxes.

B. Local, state, and the federal government use accountants to keep track of the collection of money through taxes and the spending of the collected money.

1.      A town or city's local treasure collects property tax payments from home owners.

2.      In the military, a service member in the finance department helps a unit track how much money has been spent and how much is still available for a variety of things such as travel and equipment requisition.

Transition: (As you can see, accountants are needed everywhere. Next I'll talk about which positions accountants can hold.)

Main Point II. Being an accountant can offers many career paths to follow.

A. There are several disciplines in accounting in which a person could specialize.

1.      Information from the IRS website also denotes that manufacturing companies need accountants with cost accounting knowledge.

a.       Cost accounting involves keeping track of costs relating to a job or a manufactured good which is being produced

b.      Labor, materials, and overhead are all added together to get the total cost to produce a specific good.

2.      Any business with paid employees will need an accountant who has payroll knowledge.

3.      Financial accountants specialize in compiling data into financial statements.

a.       One financial statement is the balance sheet which shows total assets, liabilities, and equity of a company.

b.      A second financial statement is the income statement which summarizes the profit or loss for a company for a specific period.

4.      Managerial accountants use accounting data to make business decisions.

B. Accountant positions can be at any level in a company.

1.      Entry level positions offer new accountants work experience required to advance to the next tier within a company.

2.      An accountant can serve in a managerial role with a company that has a large accounting staff.

3.      The top position in a company typically filled by an accountant is the CFO (chief financial officer).

C. The FBI even uses accountants.

1.      A story found on the FBI website states that FBI forensic accountants conduct the financial investigative portion of complex cases.

2.      Al Capone was busted for tax evasion by FBI forensic accountants.

Transition: (The accounting field offers a large variety of career options. One question you may have now is how much do they make?)

Main Point III. The earning potential for accountants may help provide a comfortable lifestyle.

A. Entry level accountants could start out making over $35,000 annually.

1.      Payscale.com states the average salary for entry level accounts could start out around $35,000 and be as high as $44,000 a year.

2.      The median annual salary for accountants is $47,936 according to payscale.com

B. Higher level accountants make even more money.

1.      The median salary, as stated by Payscale.com, for a CPA (certified public accountant) is $60,977.

2.      CFOs (Chief Financial Officer) have a median income of $121,942 annually according to the salary reporting site, payscale.com.

Transition: (There is much more information on the accounting field for anyone interested to do further research. Here is the information I have covered so far.)

Conclusion:

  • As an accountant, the options of where to work are not limited to location or business. Several career paths are available for accountants, from entry level positions to the executive level. Finally, the compensation accountants receive can provide for a comfortable lifestyle.
  • This information explains just a small portion of the broad accounting field. By being aware of this information, and matching it to my own skillsets and talents, I was able to choose "accountant" as the answer to "What do you want to be when you grow up?
