Difficulty learning to read and understanding

Problem: Mary was born to parents in their late 30s who had two other daughters and a son. Her parents reported that she was a friendly baby who seemed to smile, make eye contact, and interact with them normally. Her mother observed that she seemed to sit, stand, and talk later than her sisters. Mary began school at a regular age. She did poorly in elementary school and had difficulty learning to read and understanding her schoolwork. In class she blurted out nonsensical comments, made silly expressions, and generally disrupted the class. She would not obey the teacher, many times she seemed not to understand the instructions given by the teacher. Her parents were called to the school several times for conferences about her behavior and poor performance on schoolwork. The other children began making fun of her, calling her "Mary the baby." Mary spent her time outside of school playing with younger children who seemed to tolerate her better than the children her own age did. By the time Mary was 8 years old, she had fallen significantly behind her classmates in academic achievement. The school informed her parents that she would not be promoted to the third grade.: Mary was born to parents in their late 30s who had two other daughters and a son.
