Different demographic backgrounds in complex situations

Problem: In community nursing, you face patients from all different demographic backgrounds in complex situations. Demographics are statistical data regarding the characteristics of the people living in a particular place, describing them based on categories such as age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, education level, income level, and marital status. Individuals belong to many demographic groups (Ochs et al., 2024, p. 112). There are multiple ways to approach and resolve ethical concerns, such as evaluating the ethical dilemma or concern and understanding the challenge. Collecting all the relevant information pertaining to the patient and concern is important. The nurse should then apply core principles of ethical decisions such as autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Then, evaluate alternatives and make the correct ethical decision for the patient. The most important step is to evaluate the outcome and reflect on it. People learn best when reflecting upon a decision and learning from mistakes. In community nursing, nurses are exposed to all different cultures, ethnicities, and groups of patients. Healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, have an ethical responsibility to fully understand how culture shapes health beliefs and practices and influences health outcomes (Ochs et al., 2024, p. 558).
