Catholicism survived and even flourished in many places the years following Luther's break with the Church. What factor(s) do you think were most important for people's continued faith in Catholic Christianity and why? Did Catholicism mainly benefit from "grassroots" beliefs and practices or because of official responses to the challenges of the Reformation, such as the Council of Trent?
