Assignment

An abstract is "a brief, comprehensive summary of the contents of the article" (American Psychological Association, 2010, p. 25). According to Walden's Writing Center, the purpose of an abstract is to capture the essence of a research study, its topic, main argument, and main conclusions. An abstract is required in your doctoral study project. In this Assignment, you will examine the abstracts from the research articles that you sourced for Assignment 1 of this week. You will analyze these abstracts based on certain criteria. Then, you will rewrite one of the abstracts that you think does not meet expected APA and doctoral-level requirements.

To prepare for this Assignment:

• Select one of the research study articles that you found in your literature search as required in this week's Assignment 1, giving preference to one that has an abstract that you think does not meet APA standards.

Choose one of the following FROM WEEK 1:

• Using the script for a quantitative theory presented under the section "Writing a Quantitative Theoretical Perspective" (pages 60-63) in Chapter 3 of the Creswell text, write a theoretical perspective section for a potential quantitative research plan. The theoretical perspective section should be based on one of your potential areas of research that you identified in this week's Discussion 2. To help inform your writing of the theoretical perspective section, locate two quantitativejournal articles in the Walden Library. These articles should preferably use the theory that you are considering using in your doctoral research.

• Locate threequalitative journal articles in the Walden Library. One article should use an a priori theory that is modified during the process of research. The second article should generate or develop a theory at the end of the study. The third article should represent descriptive research without the use of an explicit theoretical model. Evaluate the merits of each approach, such as the advantages and disadvantages of the various uses and roles of theory. Reference each article to support your evaluation.

• Locate twomixed-methods studies that use different theoretical perspectives, such as critical theory or social learning theory. Analyze the ways in which each theoretical perspective shapes the steps taken in the research process, using Box 3.1 in the Creswell text as a guide. Also, analyze the ways in which the qualitative and quantitative methods are used in each study and how they complement each other.

• Consult standards for writing abstracts as noted in the APA Publication Manual sections and by the course text readings cited in this week's Resources.

• Review the Abstracts section of the Literature Reviews webpage

• Review the Writing an Abstract interactive media

• Use the following questions as a guide to assess the abstract:

o Did the author include a reference to the research study using a format consistent with the APA Publication Manual?
o Did the author mention the problem addressed within the study?
o Did the author state the central purpose of the study?
o Is information about the sample, population, or subjects provided?
o Are the key results summarized?
o Is the journal article clearly a report of a research study (instead of an essay, opinion paper, typology, or synthesis of past research)?
o Is the abstract no longer than a short paragraph (i.e., less than 1 double-spaced page)?
