This solution is in response to a multi -step problem with developing a cooperative learning activity for math for students in grades 9-12. The problem is outlined below:
Design of Cooperative Learning Activity
Choose a topic from any content area, but the lesson(s) must be predominantly cognitive in nature (require mental processing, not psychomotor skills). Create a cooperative activity that spans several class meetings (at least 5 days). Be sure that your project responds to the following questions and to include concepts from this field of study - refer to the checklist at the end of the chapter:
1. What are the learning objectives for this lesson?
2. Why is a cooperative learning an appropriate strategy for meeting the objectives?
3. How will students be assigned to each group?
4. How will the activity foster positive interdependence?
5. What roles will you assign within each group?
6. What forms of accountability will you build in?
7. What skills will you have to teach, and how will you teach them?
8. How will you monitor the group-work?
9. How will you evaluate student work?
This project should be descriptive and specific enough that any teaching professional could facilitate this activity.
