Develop skills in communicating evidence-based information

Assignment Problem: This assignment task provides opportunity to:

A) Independently investigate nutritional evidence

B) Develop skills in communicating evidence-based information.

Choose an original research investigation on a nutrition topic that interests you. Original research investigations are papers that have methods and results. Do not use a narrative review paper. Examples are provided via Canvas or you can choose a paper of your choice. You will be asked to nominate your preferred week and topic in week 5. Students who do not nominate their preference will be assigned randomly. A final schedule will be published on Canvas in week 6. Your topic is not approved until published on Canvas.

Deliver a 5-minute presentation to your classmates during an allocated tutorial in weeks 10. 11 or 12. Support your presentation with visual resources e.g. PowerPoint. Be prepared to respond to questions following your presentation.

Tips for better seminars:

1) Pose a clear research question from your paper. Some papers answer multiple questions. It is not necessary to cover all

3) Briefly introduce your topic to set the context for your seminar and clearly state your position.

4) Clearly explain the method used in the investigation.

5) Clearly explain the results in the paper that answer your research question. Present the most relevant results clearly and

6) Explain what they mean. Include relevant statistics so the audience can understand the magnitude of the effect.

7) Comment on the key strengths and limitations of the paper.

8) Include practical implication where possible. For example: if your paper indicates that oats lower cholesterol.

9) Communicate the quantity of oats required to elicit the effect.

10) Finish with a clear conclusion.

11) Be creative and present your seminar in an interesting manner.
