Develop excel-based financial models to help analyze cases

Objectives: In general, the students will learn to:

- Develop Excel-based financial models to help analyze cases.

- Apply knowledge of financial statements: balance sheets, income statements and cash flows in the analysis of corporations

- Apply knowledge of financial ratios and other financial metrics in the analysis of corporation financial statements

-  Apply strategic concepts and market based concepts from magazine and journal articles to better understand the strategic issues that companies are facing

- Learn how to write research-based reports in a research format.

Cases to be completed:

Individual Case Analysis: Cases will be discussed in class. Each student must develop a written analysis of the major issues in the case and provide recommendations.  The analysis will assess key factors that are qualitative and quantitative. Your written cases will be judged based on graduate school standards.

So, "throwing something together last minute" just to get a passing grade will not work for this course. Papers where this is obviously the case will receive an automatic ZERO! There will be no discussion!! Please see below

Paper Characteristics that Guarantee an Automatic ZERO.

1. Papers that simply restate the case without any type of analysis.

2. Those papers that do not follow the specific case format.

3. Those papers that have unlabeled tables and graphs.

4. Those papers where tables and graphs take up the ENTIRE page.

5. Those papers that do not make a recommendation. Or, papers in which the recommendation is NOT supported by the quantitative and qualitative analysis.

6. Those papers that DO NOT provide REASONABLE alternative solutions with some explanation.

7. Papers that have similar graphs, tables and language only in reverse order or scrambled with the absurd belief that it will not be noticed.

8. Papers that are DOUBLE Spaced and not SINGLE SPACED.

9. Papers in which the case analysis turned in is simply just the case copied over.

10. Papers where a SINGLE paragraph takes up the entire page.

11. Papers without subheadings to break-up the text and increase readability. Thus, there is a "sea" of text on the page.

12. Papers in which the student's name is handwritten on the paper.

13. Papers that include up to date research. As noted below, cases are to be completed as of the time period of the case.

Topic: Palamon Case Analysis

Detailed Question: General Case Format: All cases must be in this format. No exceptions.

I. Case Summary

The student is to summarize the case. The objective here is not to copy verbatim what is written in the case. The focus should be on the major issue(s).

II. Case Analysis

This section should include qualitative and quantitative analysis. From a qualitative perspective, the student is to assess the major issues in the case. From a quantitative perspective, the student must be able to perform applicable calculations that support his or her perspective. In most cases, the results will be presented in the form of tables and graphs.

III. Alternatives

In this section the student will present the possible alternatives for the firm based on the analysis performed.

IV. Recommendations

Given the analysis and the alternatives, the student must propose and support a course of action for the firm to undertake.

Note: The cases are to be completed as of the time period in the case. Do not use updated research in your analysis.
