Determine whether it contains a fallacy


Assignment task: For each of the following, determine whether it contains a fallacy. If it does, identify the fallacy. If it does not, write, 'no fallacy'. Briefly explain your answer.

1. Susan's views on sex and gender seemed persuasive. But on her twitter account I saw that she had tweeted a quote from a book by a bigoted radical feminist. So there must be something bigoted about Susan's own views.

2. Either we eradicate the virus completely, or we let it rip. Clearly it isn't possible to totally eliminate the virus, so we shouldn't bother trying to control its spread.

3. Most people don't have a problem with the amount of surveillance that occurs on social media platforms. So there can't be any real moral issue with the collection and use of this data for profit.

4. After vigorous patient trials over a period of three months, there is no evidence of any long term side effects of the new drug treatment. So, we can assume that there are no long term side effects. The drug is entirely safe and should be approved.

5. Caroline's views on the ethics of abortion were compelling until I learned that her parents had backed out of a termination at the last minute when they were pregnant with her. That must be the real reason behind Caroline's position. Knowing this, her arguments can be easily dismissed.
