Determine the force in each member of the scissors truss

1. Figure 1 shows a symmetrical roof truss system. You are required to determine:

1211_stability.png

(i) The stability and determinacy of the truss system.

(ii) The reaction forces at support A and H.

(iii) The forces in member AB, AC, BC and CE using Method of Joints.

2. Determine the force in each member of the scissors truss shown in Figure 2. State the whether the members are in tension or compression. The reactions at the supports are given.

3. By using the method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss in Figure 3.

4. Figure 4 shows a reinforced concrete beam subjected to a uniform distributed load and 2 point loads. You are required to:

(i) Find all the support reactions at point A and B.

(ii) Derive the shear force V(x) and bending moment M(x) as a function of distance (x) from the extreme left hand side of the beam.

(iii) Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the beam.

(iv)Sketch the reinforcement bars in the concrete beam.

(v) If the beam is made of Grade 30 concrete with the section dimension of 250mm x 400mm, check whether the beam is capable to resist the compressive bending stress.

5. Determine the slope and deflection at point B of the steel beam shown in Figure 5. The reactions have been computed. E = 200GPa, I = 475(106 ) mm4.
