Diversion:
Diversion means that the community puts together a program to help juveniles. This allows the juveniles to stay away from the juvenile justice system and the harshness that may come from them.
The purpose of Diversion Programs is to steer juveniles away from the juvenile justice system by providing supervision and support from their communities. The programs try to redirect the juvenile before they ever see the court system. The program try to eliminate a juvenile from going through processing in hopes of a release or referral. Most programs happen after an arrest and these programs allow for further education, different classes, counseling, job skills training, and recreational and sports programs. These programs also allow less spending in the juvenile justice system.
Diversion program bring pitfalls like the stigmatization of juveniles. The programs put this stigma on kids because some of these kids would not be labels as a juvenile because their crimes would not have been recognized by the juvenile justice system. This is because the juveniles may not have needed intervention because they would not commit another crime. These systems may also be discriminative, based on race and economic groups because police may be bias based on these factors. This means refers to diversions groups may be altered based on these opinions. Territorial jealousy may also be a problem, meaning that outside help may not be used due to the know it all complex that the people running the programs may have which leads to the juveniles not getting the best help possible.
Treatment Modalities
Family Therapy Interventions focuses on the juvenile and their behavioral, mental health issues, and at risk behaviors. This therapy types focuses on better the child and also discussing possible childhood traumas or drug issues with the family present. These programs focus on strengthening the family rather than just focusing on the child or parents. These typically fix the family as a unit and not just the child or the parents allowing a better support system for the child.
Art therapy focuses on using art to create a good relationship between the juvenile and the mental health workers. This treatment is best for adolescences and youth. This treatment essentially allows them to express themselves when in overwhelming circumstances instead of engaging in bad behaviors.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing the juveniles reactions of their emotions that turn into bad behaviors. This therapy teaches youth to recognize and change their maladaptive thinking patterns that then leads to a change in behaviors.
CBT for Violent and/or Highly Criminogenic Juveniles focuses on addressing the faulty or negative thought process that the leads to actions being self justified. It also helps them learn how to properly take others emotions like aggression and disrespect.
Anger Management Groups focus on using cognitive behavioral techniques to help with anger. This technique teaches juveniles to take accountability for their action and teaches them how to regulate emotions like stress and tension.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Abusing Juveniles focuses on helping youth avoid situation to which they would be around substances. The therapy helps them recognize these situation, manage urges and cravings, and remember to engage in positive behaviors.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Sexual Behaviors and Teen Pregnancy focuses on reducing sexual behaviors and teaching the youth the health needs for youth that are sexually active. The reduction focuses on reducing unprotected intercourse, std's, and facing unintended pregnancies.
I think that most of these program would be successful for kids willing to change. I think that most of these kids need to be taught how to deal with emotions and temptations. These treatments all focus on being better and changing the way the juvenile thinks and controls their actions which could be very helpful for a juvenile that has never been taught these things.
