This unit discusses the steps in the process of theory development.

So, how did we get here anyway?

Theories and models sound very nice, but who came up with them, why did they come up with them, and how did they prove them?

Did someone actually sit down one day and say, "Today, I am going to create a theory"?

This is not the way most theories are created. The process moves from creating a conceptual model to writing the theory and then empirical testing so what do these terms mean?

C- Conceptual model is a way of describing the anecdotal evidence that you are experiencing in your practice. For example you notice every time, "x" occurs "y" results. You ask yourself why this is happening. You try to explain the concepts that are occurring. As you discussed in the Unit 7 Assignment, the model precedes a theory.

T- Theory is a way of explaining what you found in the conceptual model. It predicts what will happen when certain conditions occur.

E- Empirical indicators are another way of saying data. Whether the data is quantitative or qualitative in nature the evidence that is gathered by the researcher is used to show that the theory adequately describes that which is being examined.

While anecdotal evidence which you observe in everyday life, began the process by helping us create a conceptual model. Empirical evidence helps us show that the theory created from the model has the ability to describe something.

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

• Arrange the steps in the process of theory development.

• Compare and contrast theory development to the nursing process.
