Part A: After reading the course materials for this week, list as many abnormal student behaviors you can identify. Next, use the list to think of situations where these abnormal behaviors could be acceptable. Explain why it is difficult to label any behavior as abnormal and why the current wisdom is to avoid calling people abnormal and instead refer to the behavior as dysfunctional.
Part B: Next, read Rosenhan's (1973) seminal research titled "On Being Sane in Insane Places" (article #1) and videos (#1 & 2) located under your weekly resources, and address the following:
a. Describe the purpose/procedures/setting/results of the study.
b. What is the main question Rosenhan noted about the concept of "sanity"?
c. Describe labeling, depersonalization, and generalization.
d. What did the eight "pseudopatients" do?
e. Describe how the pseudopatients behaved in the institutions.
f. How often were the pseudopatients detected?
g. What were their diagnoses?
h. How long were their stays in the hospitals?
i. How did other patients respond to the pseudopatients?
j. Why is this study still relevant today, and what is its connection to students with EBD?
