Article reviewed: Fisher et al. (2020), A randomized clinical trial of a virtual-training program for teaching applied behavior analysis skills to parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Fisher and colleagues tested a virtual training program for coaching caregivers through telehealth to use ABA skills at home. Parents who received training improved treatment integrity, and their children showed meaningful behavior change (Fisher et al., 2020). This demonstrates how telehealth can bridge research and practice by supporting caregivers directly in natural settings.

There are many strengths in this study such as its randomized design, clear BST procedures, and measurement of both caregiver fidelity and child outcomes. There are several challenges that need to be addressed, including technology access, a need for rehearsal support, and limited data on the long-term generalization across diverse families (Denison et al., 2019).

To ensure relevance and feasibility, I would co-create simple goals with families, deliver short BST sessions with modeling and feedback, and use checklists and video clips for quick feedback.

At the organizational level, OBM tools like performance expectations, checklists, and feedback systems can sustain high-quality telehealth coaching (Luiselli et al., 2022). Marketing should highlight family outcomes and convenience to strengthen partnerships (Braksick & Smith, 2023).

Integrating smart but low-burden tools such as reminders, secure platforms, and digital checklists can further support families (Haymes et al., 2015). As consultants, maintaining strong process and relationship skills improves consultation outcomes (Guiney & Zibulsky, 2017).
