CROSS-CULTURAL INTERVIEW AND SUMMARY

Instructions for Cross-Cultural Interview

Interview someone from a culture DIFFERENT than your own. It can be anyone you know (neighbor, friend, co-worker, in-law, another student). HOWEVER, IT CANNOT BE SOMEONE IN THIS CLASS. In your interview, please address the following questions-(Seems like a lot): However, this is a normal conversation length-which you will compile into an essay/paper/report-ready format.

Identity and Demographic-type questions

1. Demographics of the individual being interviewed (age, gender, level of education, what they do for a living, and how you know them).

2. Where are you from? What languages do you speak?

3. What cultural values do you have? What holidays do you celebrate?

4. How do you identify yourself culturally? How did you come to this identification?

5. Under what conditions did you and your family enter Canada (immigrant, student/work visa, political refugee, etc.)? What was that like?
Psycho-Socio-Cultural Type Questions

6. Have you/your cultural group experienced oppression/discrimination historically? How has this impacted you?

7. Have you experienced discrimination/racism/or other isms? In what ways? What happened as a result of this experience?

8. What were your expectations when you were little about what you would be when you grew up and what your life would be like?

9. Did you feel you had a lot of choice in selecting dates? In selecting mates? In finding jobs? In finding housing? In obtaining credit? In obtaining medical care in Canada?

10. How did your expectations get met or not met?

11. What are common misconceptions/stereotypes about your group that you would like to see changed or corrected?

12. How does your culture view time?

13. What do you think you would need to know to work with people of different backgrounds?

14. Do you have close personal relationships with people who are culturally and socio-economically different?

15. Do you have the desire to integrate culturally relevant considerations into your work?

16. How do your own cultural experiences and values impact the way you work?

17. What are the most important things for people outside your cultural group to learn and appreciate about your group?

18. What are the best things for you, personally, about belonging to your cultural group?
BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE FOR HEALTH

The following health-related/specific questions in order to gain a general more of a general understanding of your participant's views of culture health/illness/disease/cultural competency etc.,

19. Have you or family member ever had to be medically treated in Canada? What was the experience like?

20. Were the care provider(s) culturally competent? Why/Why not?

21. What do you do when you have cold or start / you are feeling sick?

22. How do you feel about/view death and dying?

23. Any particular tradition(s) regarding the above you would like to share?

24. What would you add/recommend to the health care system in order for it to be more culturally competent?

25. Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Instructions for:Cross-Cultural Interview Summary

Write 4 -5 double-spaced pages summarizing the information you discover through the interview. Be sure to include a general demographic description of the individual and address specifically, the following three questions:

1. What you learned about the person/other culture as a result of this assignment?

2. What you learned about yourself as a result of this assignment? (THIS IS SELF-REFLECTION)

3. Any major implications for cultural competency in health care? In Canada?

4. Please use appropriate headings, sub-headings, and PLEASE PROVIDE A CRITICAL CULTURAL ANALYSISas well as any recommendations, as well as a conclusion-THAT will be ALL YOURS....PAPERS WILL BE CHECKED FOR Authenticity/PLAGIARISM.

Criteria for Grade
Content of paper will be evaluated based on the extent to which there is:

1. Evidence that the above-outlined instructions were followed and questions are answered.

2. Evidence of original/analytical thought, critical analysis and your conclusive thoughts based on your interview. Consistent with the presentation assignment expectations, 4 references will be required - integrate at least two distinct references per question.

3. Clarity, organization, cover page, and a logical flow/presentation of written information.
