Assignment:

Instructions

You will use the Securexam Remote Proctor for this examination. The area in which you take the examination must be absolutely free of books, notes, and other materials. The Securexam Proctor device must be placed so that there are no obstructions to the view, and lights in the room must be sufficient to allow the viewer to see the contents and activity in the testing room. You should keep your attention on the screen and not engage in suspicious activity such as glancing toward what could be hidden notes.

You should not leave the room at any point during the examination, so be sure to take care of any pressing business before beginning the exam. You are not allowed to answer the telephone or talk to anyone during the examination, and no person should enter the room in which you are testing. You may not access any information, electronic or otherwise. Any attempt to access outside information will result in a zero on the exam.

It is essential that you understand that you must respond to questions in your own words and demonstrate that you have a strong knowledge of the material. Simply cutting and pasting from another source, including lectures, will constitute plagiarism and will result in a "0" on the exam.

You need to stay within the posted time limit for the examination. All in all, you need to treat the examinations in this course as if they were in-class examinations. You should prepare thoroughly, open and complete the examination without interruption of any sort, and submit it within the time limit.

Written Composition I and II are prerequisites for this course, and it is thus assumed that you will write in an organized, coherent, and relatively error-free fashion. Lack of organization and grammatical and mechanical errors will lower the grade on your examination.

Nature of the Examination

Your examination will be essay in nature and will consist of at least three questions calling for a paragraph of a minimum of 150 words each and one question calling for an essay response of at least 300 words. Questions will be presented one at a time. Backtracking is prohibited.

In preparation for the examination, you should look over the stories and study the lectures. You should also read "Some Suggestions for Writing about Literature" posted under "Course Information."

You are responsible for all of the material covered, but I offer the following suggestions to get you started on your review. You should be able to define/discuss the following:

1. From the introductory lecture, the definitions of romanticism, transcendentalism, realism, Southwest humor, and local color writing (You may be asked to show how a certain piece of literature demonstrates one of these philosophies or schools of writing.)

2. Emily Dickinson's attitude toward religion and toward death as revealed in her poetry.

3. The Bierce story as an exercise in a post-mortem consciousness.

4. "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" as an example of Southwest humor.

5. The contrast between Huck and Tom, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a character's search for identity, and the novel as social commentary.

6. "The Luck of the Roaring Camp" as an example of local color writing.

7. "Editha" as an example of realistic writing and Editha as a character who "unknows reality."

8. The art vs. reality theme in "The Real Thing."

9. "The Beast in the Jungle" as a psychological ghost story and a comparison of Editha and John Marcher.
