Data Manipulation in EXCEL

How to enter in data manually to an EXCEL spreadsheet and then create formulas to perform calculations on that data. In this lesson, you will learn how to import data to EXCEL from an external source, use tools built-in to EXCEL to manipulate the data, and create a pivot table.

Step 1 - Create a new blank worksheet in EXCEL.

Step 2 - Import the data.

In the previous lesson you entered in your data manually. Manual data entry is fine when the spreadsheet is relatively small and the data entry can be done quickly. When the amount of data is large - hundreds of rows and many columns- manual data entry is typically not feasible. EXCEL provides the functionality to import data directly from another source including: from an ACCESS database, from the Web, from a text file, and other data sources.

For this lesson you will import the data from a text file. You should have downloaded the file stocks.txt from the course website already. If not, do so now (NOTE: REMEMBER WHERE YOU SAVE THE FILE!).

To import your data, perform the following steps:

1. Click on the Data tab on the ribbon.

2. The first pane on the Data tab of the ribbon is "Get External Data." Click on the icon labeled "From Text."
Mac Users:Click on the "Text" icon in the "External Data Sources" section of the tab.

3. A dialog box should open prompting you choose the file you want to import. Navigate to where you saved thestocks.txt file and click the Open button.
