Data Analysis Tasks

There are ten data analysis tasks (A-J). All are compulsory except task C and task F. Task C is optional as we are covering this area in our major assignment anyway. Task F is optional as the content is covered in VU's Business Finance unit.

Data analysis task A - estimating straight line relationships using regression analysis

NOTEs: Use the excel regression formula.

1. If you have Excel on a Windows PC you might have to add the formula to your existing formulas (if it is not already visible in the Data tab); google instructions for addi8ng regression formula.

2. If you have Excel on a MAC you might have to add the formula to your existing formulas (if it is not already visible in the Data tab); google instructions for adding regression formula.

Data analysis task B - prescriptive analytics using Solver to maximise objectives

Data analysis task C - reporting quality

Interrogate the quality (comprehensiveness and accessibility) of 'triple bottom line' reporting and performance results for one company from the following list whose annual report is in the 'reports folder': ar aegon; ar akzo nobel; ar novo nordisk; ar P&G sustainability report - especially note links at the end of P&Gs sustainability report to the GRI index

Completion is not required, but if you want to as an option, provide a 200 word comment on the quality (comprehensiveness and accessibility) of 'triple bottom line' reporting and performance results for one companyand submit to Collaborate by start of week 12 class

Data analysis task D - using Excel pivot tables to create dynamic dashboards and prepare Pareto analysis.

Complete this exercise and submit to Collaborate by start of week  7 class

Data analysis task E - Using correlations to summarise relationships - executive compensation and return on investment performance

Data analysis task F - Using Excels present and future value functions in capital budgeting

Data analysis task G - Using Excel's Solver and applying constraints for resource and process issues

Data analysis task H - Using Tableau's business intelligence analysis to calculate and display  cost and quality relationships

Complete task H in Data Analysis folder in collaborate. Either go for the trial version of Tableau which has a limited life; or get the free student version which lasts 12 months (www.tableau.com). Complete this exercise and submit to Collaborate by start of week 11 class. The steps:

1. Goto: Tableau.com

2. Click: 'learning' tab (top of screen)

3. Click: 'start to learn' box (middle screen)

4. Expand: '3 videos - Getting Started - 34 mts' (use arrow)

5. Choose 'Getting started 25 minutes'; you should get screen below

6. If video starts, pause it - and get the required data sets you need for this task (the 2 files listed below); can be got from the "Data Sets' link (see bottom of above screenshot) or are downloadable from 'business intelligence' folder in collaborate.

7. Open the Tableau program on your computer

8. Start video; then work through steps in the video yourself by:

  • watching first step
  • pausing video
  • replicating that step with your active copy of Tableau
  • watching second step
  • pausing video
  • continue to look at next step then replicate until finish all steps.

9. When complete all steps; save your Tableau workbook as : 'H'(file will have a 'twb' extension - for Tableau WorkBook)
